Childhood Obesity: Turn Off The TV And Lose Weight

Television is considered as one of the most popular medium of entertainment. Every night, millions of viewers stick to television to watch their favorite channels. But besides these positive sides, television has downsides as well. It creates problems in concentration power of children. It has become an ultimate wastage of time with no literary value. Moreover, the researchers have unveiled that television may cause the obesity problem in children.

A study has been revealed that those children who watch less television are thinner as compared to those children who do not curtail their viewing time. In today’s time period, obesity is occurring in the youngsters at a great speed. One thing to remember is that overweight children are having high risk of heart disease and hypertension.

Watching television has become an important part of todays lifestyle. Children are not only stick to cartoon network but also love to watch music videos and video tapes, play video games, and general channel surf.

The other reasons of television that can promote obesity include

  • It can be seen that children are easily influenced by the advertisements shown in television. The commercials are flooded with sugary cereals, chocolates and candy bars that force them to indulge in sweets dishes a lot.
  • Television irregularizes the activities of people. They lounge on a sofa and bed while watching television for hours that ultimately act as a cause of obesity in them. Moreover, watching television makes people lethargic and does not let them engage in physical activities.

It is very important for parents to look over the sedentary lifestyle of their children otherwise it can create lots of uncertain troubles. They should try to limit the viewing television time of children. Another sporty idea is to put a tag of ‘NO TV’ and encourage your children to take up outdoor games, indoor games and other activities instead. Educate your children about the drawbacks of television which can also be an effective step to take up.

It is impractical to put the entire blame for childhood obesity on television. Excessive use of computer can also contribute obesity. Be responsible towards your children’s healthy body and soul. Monitor the activities of children and if found them wrong at any place correct them calmly.

    Tv was a great culprit but now I think that video games and internet are even worse.

    I say, turn the tv off and tell the kidds to “go outside”. When I was a kid my mom did that all the time. At the 30 minute mark she would walk in and turn the tv off and tell me to go play outside (I was thin!). :smile:
    In our house if we watch tv we say “we are veggin’ out” - vegetables are probably more active.
    Here’s to less media, more play time.
