In the research, conducted on American children it is found that children who sleep less and have less dreams, have more chance to become overweight. In this research it is also found that one hour less sleep may increase the two-fold risk of being overweight and dreaming one hour less or rapid eye movement (REM) while sleeping may three-fold increased risk of being overweight.
This Research was conducted on 335 children and adolescents between the age group of 7 to 17 years. During the research children were continuously monitored while they were sleeping for three consecutive nights. Weight and height were also measured to calculate body mass index (BMI) of the children.
Result of this research has shown the fact that, children who are overweight, sleep about 22 minutes less per night. Although these mechanisms are currently under investigation, the link between short sleep duration and the overweight condition may be due to behavioral and biological changes as a result of sleep deprivation.
I the past studies it was found that sleep deprivation affects the hormone balances that control hunger and as someone who sleep less have more opportunities to eat.
Result of this research also shows an important relation between REM sleep and high BMI and obesity. Result of this research suggests that the short sleep and obesity association may be attributed to reduced REM sleep time and decreased activity during REM sleep.
