A study appears in the journal fertility and Sterility, emphasis on the fact that obesity increases the risk of miscarriage.
According to Dr. Mostafa Metwally and colleagues from the University of Sheffield, UK, “obesity is an epidemic and with its increase rate, number of women of reproductive age are also increases”.
The investigators conducted a review of articles to identify studies that compared normal-weight and overweight women who miscarried. The main outcome measure was pregnancy loss at less than 20 weeks.
In this analysis around 16 studies were included and in the result it was found that women who were overweight and obese have around 67 percent more chance of miscarriage then the women who have normal weight. The risk was even higher when the woman, but not their partner, required a fertility treatment.
“”The current evidence suggests that obesity may indeed increase the risk of miscarriage, both in the general population and possibly after (fertility therapies),”" Metwally and colleagues write. They also mentioned that, this evidence is not fully conclusive because their is differences between available studies, and because of the paucity of studies in specific treatment categories.”"
